LUSAKA – African Boxing Union (ABU) Bantamweight Champion David “Snipper” Mwale has formally presented his championship belt to the Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Hon. Elvis C. Nkandu, ahead of his highly anticipated WBC International Bantamweight fight against Ghana’s Michael Decardi Nelson.
Hon. Nkandu has commended the boxing fraternity for their dedication and continued success in competitive events, acknowledging their ability to thrive despite financial challenges.
“I want to start by appreciating Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions for the incredible work you have been doing. I know it’s not easy, as resources are not always available,” Hon. Nkandu said.
He further praised the sport’s resilience, stating, “Even when you express concerns about resources, you still manage to successfully host events. However, we must not take that for granted. We need to find ways to supplement your efforts. The Government remains committed to creating an enabling environment for sports to thrive.”
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fostering sports development, emphasizing initiatives such as the Presidential Athlete Support Initiative to mobilize additional resources for boxing events. He also highlighted the Ministry’s role in securing support from the private sector.
Mwale was accompanied by Christopher Malunga, Manager and Promoter for Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions, along with officials from the Zambia Professional Boxing and Wrestling Control Board. Malunga expressed gratitude for the government’s continued support of boxing.
Reflecting on Mwale’s career trajectory following his ABU Bantamweight victory against South Africa’s Innocent Mantengu, Malunga emphasized the significance of the upcoming WBC International Bantamweight bout.
However, he noted the financial challenge of raising K1, 200, 000 needed to stage the fight and appealed for assistance. “Boxing has contributed immensely to Zambia’s sporting legacy, and we must ensure we maintain this high standard,” Malunga stated.
The WBC International Bantamweight bout between David “Snipper” Mwale and Michael Decardi Nelson is set to take place on May 24, 2025, at the Government Complex in Lusaka.
