Government has urged young people in North-Western Province to take advantage of opportunities in the mining sector through legal and structured channels while steering clear of drug and substance abuse.
Speaking during a Town Hall Meeting held in Solwezi as part of the 2026 National Youth Week celebrations, Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Hon. Elvis C. Nkandu said the province’s rapid growth, largely driven by mining activities, presents significant opportunities for young people to participate in economic development.
He, however, emphasised the importance of engaging in legal mining activities, noting that government wants young people to benefit from the mining value chain in a lawful and organised manner.
The Minister encouraged the youth to position themselves not only for employment in the mining sector but also as entrepreneurs and service providers supplying goods and services to mining companies.
Hon. Nkandu said government is working to ensure that young people benefit from employment, skills development and supply opportunities linked to the mining industry.
He further called on the youth to explore other sectors such as agriculture, ICT, sports and the creative industries as part of efforts to promote sustainable economic participation.
Meanwhile, the Minister expressed concern over the growing challenge of drug and substance abuse among young people, warning that such vices undermine their potential and productivity.
He said government, working with various stakeholders, is strengthening awareness, counselling and rehabilitation efforts to address the problem.
And North-Western Province Minister Hon. Robert Lihefu said government is committed to ensuring that young people in the province benefit from the many economic opportunities created by mining and other sectors.
Hon. Lihefu encouraged the youth to remain proactive, acquire relevant skills and take advantage of empowerment programmes being implemented by government.
The meeting also featured several activities including panel discussions on unlocking mining opportunities for youth and addressing mental health challenges, as well as exhibitions, entertainment and interactive plenary sessions involving various stakeholders.
