Government has today received a cheque amounting to K2.6 million from ZSIC General Insurance Limited to support the rehabilitation of the roof at the National Heroes Stadium.
Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Hon. Elvis C. Nkandu, MP, described the development as a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to restore and modernise the country’s premier sports facility.
Hon. Nkandu stated that the National Heroes Stadium is a critical national asset that plays a key role in the development of sport and the promotion of national unity. He noted that while substantial progress has been made, including the successful installation of a hybrid playing surface, the repair of the damaged roof remains essential for the stadium to fully resume hosting competitive matches.
The Minister further clarified that the delay in undertaking the roof rehabilitation works was due to the insurance claims process, as the facility is insured. He emphasised the importance of timely processing of such claims to facilitate the quick restoration of public infrastructure and minimise public concern.
And ZSIC General Insurance Limited Managing Director, Mr. Trevor Jengajenga, said the payout demonstrates the company’s commitment to fulfilling its mandate of safeguarding national assets and supporting national development.
Mr. Jengajenga explained that the damage to the stadium roof was caused by severe storm winds in separate incidents. He confirmed that the funds released will cover both material and installation costs, and have already been transferred to the Ministry.
He added that ZSIC General Insurance paid out over K500 million in claims in 2025 across various sectors, highlighting the company’s financial strength and reliability.
Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the National Heroes Stadium is fully rehabilitated and restored to a standard that meets both national and international requirements.
The Ministry has further indicated that works on the roof are expected to commence soon, paving the way for the eventual reopening of the stadium to the public.
